Kilbarchan AAC star Jemma Reekie races to top of world rankings

Kilbarchan AAC star Jemma Reekie has powered her way to the top of the 800m world rankings.

The latest IAAF World Athletics event rankings have recently been issued and the middle-distance runner has incredibly pushed to number one spot in the women’s 800m list.

Under a points system based on a number of races, Reekie is just clear of England’s Keely Hodgkinson, who is placed second despite beating Reekie to an Olympic medal in Tokyo earlier this month.

The pair will do battle again in Diamond League action in Oregon this weekend, with gold and bronze medalists from the 800m Olympic final Athing Mu and Raevyn Rogers also due to contest the distance.

In the Women’s 1500m, Reekie’s friend and training partner Laura Muir is now ranked number two in the world, behind only Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon.

That follows Muir’s incredible silver medal performance in Tokyo.

A scottishathletics spokesperson said: “Well done to both Jemma and Laura and to their coach, Andy Young, on putting athletics in Scotland right up in lights around the globe.”
