Kiko Casilla rumoured to be negotiating early end to Leeds United deal amid La Liga offer

Spanish newspaper AS have claimed Kiko Casilla is on the verge of joining LaLiga outfit Elche from Leeds United this summer.

They claim Casilla has already agreed a deal in principle with Elche, it now remains to be seen whether he will be allowed to join the club on a free transfer after terminating his Leeds contract, or arrive on loan with an option to buy.

Casilla has been restricted to fleeting appearances at Elland Road since his FA-sanctioned ban in 2020 and Illan Meslier's rise to prominence between the posts.

The 34-year-old's contract expires in 2023 which is one reason for the delay in arranging Casilla's exit as there will likely be some compensation paid by the club if a mutual termination agreement can be reached.

Victor Orta's previous association with Elche appears to have streamlined negotiations between the two clubs in this particular deal, and could pave the way for a closer working relationship in future.

Orta took on a similar sporting directorship role at the Spanish club during the 2014/15 season.

"In addition to the addition of Kiko, there has been talk of three other Leeds players, but negotiations are still at a standstill," report AS.

Casilla's departure would mean Leeds United are increasingly light in terms of their goalkeeping options heading into the new season.

While Meslier remains the club's undisputed No. 1, 19-year-old Elia Caprile would become the de-facto second-choice 'keeper.

This is unlikely to be the case, meaning Leeds could enter the transfer market for a back-up goalkeeper in the coming weeks, in order to supplement Marcelo Bielsa's options.

This would represent forward planning, in the event Meslier suffers an unforeseen injury which keeps him out of action for an extended period.

Casilla featured just three times in the Premier League last season, as well as making two appearances in the domestic cup competitions.

Should Leeds and the player come to an agreement over his contract situation, this could be the curtain call for the Spanish goalkeeper at Elland Road.
