Kieron Dyer calls Alexander Isak ‘dodgy’ signing but backs striker to come good under Eddie Howe

Former Newcastle United midfielder Kieron Dyer has labelled Alexander Isak as a “dodgy” signing after Eddie Howe named the Sweden international in his starting line-up against Bournemouth.

Coincidentally, Isak’s last Premier League start also came against the Cherries at St James’ Park in September. Injuries have hampered the 23-year-old’s Toon career since his record-breaking move last summer.

However, fans have witnessed glimpses of the quality which persuaded Newcastle to stump up £58million for the striker. A memorable debut at Anfield introduced Isak to the top flight and substitute cameos in recent weeks have also added to the hype.

However, ahead of the clash at the Vitality Stadium, not everybody was relishing his long-awaited return to the team sheet. Ex-Toon star Dyer - who endured his own injuries problems on Tyneside - named Isak as the only blemish on an otherwise flawless transfer record since the Saudi-led takeover.

“I was touching just before the break about how good Newcastle’s recruitment has been,” Dyer told Sky Sports. “But if there has been one dodgy signing you could say it would be him (Isak). Perhaps he has not had the run of games, he’s had injuries to contend with as well.

“But I trust that Newcastle’s transfer policy is great and, once he gets a run of games under his belt, we are going to see the real Isak.”
