Kieran Trippier warned of big risk behind 'incredible' Newcastle transfer decision

Kieran Trippier would be risking his place in England's World Cup squad amid reports of a January transfer to Newcastle United.

That is the view of former Crystal Palace owner and talkSPORT presenter Simon Jordan, who insists the full-back would not be making a 'football decision' to move to Tyneside.

Reports have indicated Newcastle's owners have identified Trippier as a priority target in the upcoming January transfer window, with several claims indicating it is almost a 'done deal'.

However, the Magpies remain tight-lipped on rumours over the former Tottenham defender, and ChronicleLive understands the 31-year-old's preferred destination remains Manchester United.

Trippier remains a regular for the Three Lions under Gareth Southgate, and started in the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy at Wembley in July.

However, Jordan believes this place in future squads ahead of next year's World Cup in Qatar could be in jeopardy should the full-back agree a switch to Newcastle.

The presenter told talkSPORT: "The bottom line is that Trippier is a good player.

"I'm surprised to see him leaving Spain to go to Newcastle because there is a distinct possibility, whichever way you cut it, they're going to get relegated.

"You've got a World Cup coming up. So it's an incredible decision on his part because he is risking the position of playing for his country in a World Cup by taking the decision to go to Newcastle.

"I would think the economics of it are very appealing, because there's no football decision here."
