Kieran Trippier makes headlines in Spain with Newcastle benefitting from Atletico Madrid regret

Kieran Trippier's showing for England in the 6-2 win over Iran got the media in his native country talking but also saw Spanish newspapers dedicating column inches to the Newcastle United favourite.

Trippier left the Spanish capital in January to become the first player signed under the new Newcastle regime. The Magpies have made a well-documented rise up the Premier League ever since, with Trippier's former side Atletico Madrid struggling by their usual lofty standards, currently trailing La Liga leaders Barcelona by 13 points.

Spanish outlet AS say Atletico are 'longing' for Trippier back at present after the 32-year-old once again proved his leadership skills on the world stage this week. The Madrid-based publication insist no full-back at the Wanda Metropolitano can match what Trippier offered the club during his stint abroad.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone certainly tried his best to keep Trippier at Los Colchoneros despite his desire for a Premier League return, even trying to convince the England international to stay at the club in the car park at the training ground on the day he said his goodbyes.

“He just looks like someone who get you motivated before a game and that," Trippier said about the Atletico chief recently. "He’s the most passionate manager I’ve ever played for 100 per cent.

"Nobody comes close. He’s that passionate the way he runs La Liga and the club itself. You know he’s the boss."

Trippier has proven to be a Newcastle bargain in recent months, spearheading the north east outfit with the captain's armband this season. His club form has also seen Gareth Southgate trust him as his first choice right-back at the World Cup.

Trippier followed in Alan Shearer's footsteps by becoming the first Newcastle player to captain England at a major tournament when he received the armband after Harry Kane's withdrawal during Monday's win.
