Kieran Tierney update: Arsenal defender has not suffered injury setback despite withdrawing from Scotland squad

Kieran Tierney is set to withdraw from Scotland’s international double-header but the Arsenal defender has not suffered an fresh injury setback.

The 22-year-old rehabilitation from a double hernia operation is being carefully managed and after consultation between medical staff for club and country, Tierney has opted not to be included for the Euro 2020 qualification double-header against Russia and San Marino.

Tierney will instead continue his recovery at the Gunners’ London Colney training base and he is available for Thursday’s Europa League match against Standard Liege.

He had been hopeful of playing some part in last night’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United but was not risked.

The £25million summer signing from Celtic has featured for just 77 minutes this season - in last week’s 5-0 EFL Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

Reports had suggested Tierney had sustained a fresh problem but his withdrawal has been described by a club source as part of his “phased return to match fitness”.
