Kieran Tierney's Arsenal tactical switch that shows Mikel Arteta's trust in former Celtic star

Everyone knew Kieran Tierney had the talent to succeed when he moved to Arsenal for £25million last summer.

His defensive skills and his tenacity are excellent but he's equally adept going forward and can provide wicked balls into the box.

It's typical for Scotland that Steve Clarke's best two players play in the same position with Andy Robertson arguably the best in the world at left back.

But Tierney's injury problems hampered his final season at Celtic and it looked like they would continue in his Arsenal career with just 12 first team appearances by the time the country had gone into lockdown back in March.

Questions were being asked about the intelligence of paying such a big fee for Tierney when he appeared to be so injury prone but since Project Restart, it's fair to say he's answered those questions.

He's played every one of Arsenal's games since coming back, with just one of those from the bench in the 2-1 defeat to Brighton in the second game back.

The 23-year-old is one of the few Gunners players that has been given that chance, with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette sharing the striking duties, while the defensive selections have changed regularly with David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and Sead Kolasinic all getting game time.

But on Wednesday night when Arsenal took on Liverpool, it was Tierney's turn to slot in at centre back in a huge show of faith from Mikel Arteta.

The former Rangers midfielder has spoken on countless occasions about his delight that Tierney is now making a name for himself.

And along with Tierney, it was another young prospect in the shape of Bakary Saka that has also earned the ultimate trust of the Arsenal boss.

The fluidity of the Arsenal formation meant both players were ultimately playing in two positions during the game.

Tierney started at left centre back in a back five with Saka at left wing back. But when Arsenal were in position they shaped up to allow Tierney to go down the wing and Saka pushed one forward so they could be more of a threat.

It meant they had plenty of cover for the frightening Liverpool front three but also provided plenty of attacking threat when they needed.

It was more evident after Liverpool took the lead but Tierney was almost on a man-marking job for Mo Salah when he was cutting in from the right hand side.

The change into centre back is also good news for Clarke. Although Tierney is best at left back, it would allow Scotland to get both him and Robertson into the team as they look to qualify for the European Championships next summer.
