Kieran Tierney's added Arsenal importance as fans left puzzled by Brighton benching

Scotland international Kieran Tierney has been named as a substitute for his side's clash with Brighton.

The rampaging left-back was among a handful of players to earn credit in the wake of the sobering 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday.

But he has been handed a watching brief to start at the Amex Stadium as Sead Kolašinac returns to the starting XI.

That's not a major surprise as Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta looks to keep his £25m star fresh after his first 90 minutes in six months following shoulder surgery.

And the Spaniard might be looking at the bigger picture with his central defence decimated following the injury to Pablo Mari and David Luiz's suspenion.

Some may view the Brazilian's enforced absence as no bad thing but Tierney is a viable option from the bench at both left-back and central defence.

Tierney has experience playing centrally for both Celtic and Scotland. The 22-year-old captained the national team against Holland while playing in the heart of the defence.

But the decision to remove him from the starting line-up isn't universally popular.

Captain Budweiser vented: "Tierney deserved a start today."

Qalil added: "I dunno why Tierney is not playing, that's a poor decision from Arteta."

Joe said: "Tierney benched? Arteta is so weird."

But Jas offered a more reasonable assessment, saying: "Good attacking lineup by Arteta. I think Tierney is on the bench cause Arteta will use him cautiously. Playing him every game is a huge risk."
