Kieran Tierney gives verdict on Granit Xhaka red card and Arsenal's slump

Kieran Tierney does not believe he and his Arsenal team-mates are helping Mikel Arteta as their poor form continues.

The Gunners lost to Burnley at the Emirates, their fourth straight home defeat in the Premier League.

Pressure is mounting on Arteta as Arsenal remain in the bottom-half, just five points above the relegation zone.

Tierney concedes there are small signs of improvement, but not enough to revive their season and it is on them to repay their manager's faith.

He said on Sky Sports: "We are not showing the manager what we can do and how much we believe in him.

"Every game there are signs we are doing a bit better but it is still not good enough. At half time we need to be going in the lead but we are not doing that.

Arsenal's task against Burnley was made harder after Granit Xhaka was sent-off in the second-half.

The Swiss midfielder was dismissed for violent conduct with the Gunners in the ascendancy.

But Tierney is not convinced that going down to ten men was crucial to their defeat.

"It is hard to say the red card cost us the game," he added. "It was always going to be a lot tougher."

The Scottish defender was keen to refer to Arteta as a "great manager" however and challenged the players to find the winning formula.

He continued: "Hard work is the only thing [that can fix this], nothing else for it. There are no excuses. There is nothing I can say that will make people believe a positive thing is going to come out of this.

"We are lucky we have a great manager. We just need to show better on the pitch."
