Kieran Tierney gets new role for Arsenal friendly as Celtic hero hammers in volley against Watford

Kieran Tierney took on an unusual new role for Arsenal in their friendly win over Watford on Wednesday.

The Gunners are preparing for the start of the Premier League season next weekend and Mikel Arteta has been running the rule over his two left-backs.

The arrival of Nuno Tavares from Sporting CP means Tierney's starting spot is at risk if his form begins to drop.

But it appears Arteta has a bold idea on how to fit both his left-sided stars into the team.

In the second half of their 4-1 victory, Tierney emerged from the bench and took up a far higher role than he is used to.

While Tavares and later Sead Kolasinac occupied the left-back spot, Tierney joined Nicolas Pepe and Alexandre Lacazette deep in the Watford half.

And he even found his scoring touch when he drifted in at the back post to hammer in a close-range volley on his weaker right foot.

"Volley" may be generous actually - it would have been difficult for him to miss given the ball fell kindly to him two yards out.

But they all count and the ex-Celtic man celebrated it with a nonchalance that suggested he does it all the time.

It's unclear if Tierney on the wing is something Arteta will look to once the competitive action kicks off - in all probability, Kolasinac will leave and the Scot will assume his role as first-choice left-back.

But if he does it could be an interesting proposition for Steve Clarke and Scotland who are desperately lacking in wide midfielders.
