Kieran Tierney and the unknown Celtic origin story as Paul McStay reveals family connection to Arsenal star

Celtic legend Paul McStay has revealed it was his dad who discovered Kieran Tierney.

The left-back, now a Premier League star with Arsenal, progressed through the ranks at Parkhead having signed for his boyhood heroes aged just seven.

He went on to become a hero at the club during Brendan Rodgers' era of incredible domestic dominance before the Gunners paid £25million to take him down south.

McStay admits he's always kept a keen eye on his development thanks to a little known family connection.

He says his father John was the man who first scouted the Scotland international as a kid and reckons he'll only enhance his reputation further at Euro 2020.

"He's doing well down there, isn't he? I think he gave everything to Celtic when he was there," McStay told Go Radio.

"A wee back story about that, I don't know if you were aware - my dad spotted him.

"He was the scout that took him into Celtic at a young age. So, we've always kept a close eye on Kieran and what he was up to and how he was progressing.

"I'm just delighted to see him doing so well down in England.

"I definitely think he'll be a star in the Euros. He's an outstanding talent and playing down south, competing against better teams week in, week out has certainly helped him."
