Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson myth busted as former Celtic star earns 'different class' label from Scotland skipper

Andy Robertson reckons he and Kieran Tierney have finally destroyed the myth they can’t star together for Scotland.

The skipper and his colleague ran riot against the Faroes to help move to second spot in World Cup qualifying Group F.

With Robertson at left wing-back and Tierney terrifying the minnows from just inside as left centre-back, they caused mayhem.

The Liverpool star admits he’s savouring the partnership and proving critics who say the pair are too similar to feature in the same side wrong.

Robertson and Tierney dovetailed superbly as the Gunners player was Scotland’s man of the match for the third straight time setting up both of John McGinn’s goals and one for Che Adams.

His captain said: “KT was different class with three assists, backing it up and helping me out and always giving options.

“People who say we can’t play together have been proven wrong. A lot is said about KT and me but we don’t compete against each other. We don’t make a big deal about it and we’re just happy to play anywhere for the Scotland shirt.

“Now he’s fully fit and flying at Arsenal. He’s shown that in these three games and in the Serbia game I thought we linked up pretty well down that left-hand side.

“When he goes I sit and he always gives us an option down that side. I always try to help him in defence and going forward.

“It’s a pleasure to play with these guys like McGinn and the squad is full of quality. Look at the bench, it was so strong and we’ve built a squad that’s really strong.

“It’s a privilege to play in this team and hopefully there are still a lot of big things to come from all of us.”

While Tierney was a sensation again, McGinn also maintained his talismanic Scotland form with another couple of strikes.

The Aston Villa ace now has 10 in the Dark Blue and relished the room operating in pockets behind the front two of Adams and Lyndon Dykes.

Robertson reckons it’s also a pleasure to play alongside McGinn and said: “He’s unbelievable but when he pulls on a Scotland shirt he’s unbelievable all the time.

“I’ve known him since he was a young boy. Lyndon Dykes took one off his toe from my cross in the first half that left us a bit unhappy because he could have been walking off with a ball.

“He has been the catalyst for a lot of what we’ve done.”

Scotland’s win put them into a decent position in the section. Although four points were dropped in the opening two matches of qualification to Austria and Israel, the Faroes win boosted them up to second spot in the standings.

Robertson is content with the early haul and told the SFA: “I think it’s been a good week as a whole. It’s two draws – we wanted to win them and could have won them but we take the points.

“We have a lot of work to do but we’re still in it.

“We go into September full of confidence and we can look forward to the summer.

“The World Cup qualifying group is still open, we’re unbeaten and we take the positives and move on.”
