Kieran Donaghy says David Clifford 'will have to learn' after seeing red again

Kieran Donaghy says that Kerry captain David Clifford 'will have to learn' not to react to off the ball challenges.

It comes after the East Kerry star was sent off for his role in an incident during his side's Kerry SFC quarter-final win over St Brendan's.

He was sent off late on in the tight victory after clashing with Brian Leonard off the ball.

Clifford will miss his side's semi-final clash after his goal in the closing minutes proved the difference in the last eight tie.

In February, Clifford received a similar red card in a tussle with Tyrone defender Ben McDonnell - a clash Peter Keane's side went on to lose.

A marked man for club and county, Kingdom legend Kieran Donaghy reckons that Clifford will learn to turn a blind eye to off the ball challenges in the future.

"It is tough on David. He was also sent off last year," Donaghy told Sky Sports' Inside The Game.

"When you're an inside forward, you are targeted and he's been targeted non-stop, whether it's playing with Kerry or his club Fossa or East Kerry.

"The incident was unfortunate. He's running down the pitch, they're up [two points] and he's trying to get on a ball. A man meets him on the 45, grabs him around the neck. He (David Clifford) literally pulls him in and lifts his leg to get him off him.

"Unfortunately, it's often the reactor that's caught in these situations. Probably refs could do with a lot more help from umpires and linesmen on who is actually starting these altercations because you've got a forward that's running down the field trying to get on a ball and kick an insurance score and he's met by somebody that's not even looking at the ball.

"That's par for the course. David will have to learn and he will learn (not to react)."
