Kieran Donaghy was 'disgusted' by the 'BLACK DIVES MATTER' social media post made about Raheem Sterling by Basketball Ireland CEO Bernard O'Byrne.
O'Byrne, a former FAI chief executive, made the comment on a BBC story asking if England should have been awarded a penalty against Denmark after Sterling went down in extra-time.
After coming under fire for the comment, O'Byrne said in a statement on Friday: “My choice of words commenting on a penalty incident were not thought out. It was an error of judgement and I wholeheartedly apologise for the comments.”
But his apology has not washed with Donaghy, who for many years combined playing basketball for Tralee Warriors in the Irish Super League with his inter-county commitments for Kerry.
Referencing O'Byrne's social media comment, the four-time All-Ireland football winner tweeted: "Phone on fire this morning. Disgusted to see this.
"I’ve worked so hard to promote the game of basketball in Ireland in a positive light as I [love] this game.
"His comment does not reflect the REAL basketball people of Ireland and I don’t think the rushed apology will cut it."
Basketball Ireland have said on the matter: "Basketball Ireland CEO Bernard O’Byrne has deleted a recent social media post, which made reference to an incident at Euro 2020. The comment was made from his personal account."
They added: "Basketball Ireland would like to stress its ongoing commitment to inclusion and basketball’s diverse community, which has been led by Mr O’Byrne in recent years."
