Kids skip class for water conservation

Young students attend an activity at the Water Conservation Programme called ‘One Suntory Mizuiku: We Love Water’ in Nakhon Nayok. Mongkol Bangprapa

Nakhon Nayok: Young students are gaining valuable lessons in water conservation and environmental awareness through school-based activities and camps.

Pitchapa Saengkla (Kimju), an 11-year-old sixth-grade student at Ban Map Fuktong School in Chon Buri, said the program helped her understand the importance of water and nature.

"I want Thailand and the world to remain abundant so the planet won't get too hot. If we all help by turning off unnecessary water, we can save electricity costs at school and at home," she said. "When I see leaking water, I can tell my parents so it won't be wasted."

Meanwhile, Chananon Thongjui, also 11 years old and a sixth-grade student at Wat Nong Pla Mor School in Saraburi, said the camp taught him about the water cycle and the value of using water wisely.

"I learned how water evaporates and returns to the ground, and how important it is to conserve water," he said.

The two were among 400 students from Saraburi, Rayong and Chon Buri provinces who attended the Water Conservation Programme called "One Suntory Mizuiku: We Love Water".

It has been held for the third consecutive year under this year's theme "No Water, No Life", highlighting the importance of sustainable water management and youth engagement.

Suntory Beverage & Food Thailand, in collaboration with Suntory PepsiCo Beverage Thailand, has joined forces with the Water Resources Department, the Pollution Control Department and the Department of Climate Change and Environment. It was held in Nakhon Nayok from June 10-12.

Deputy Director of the Department of Water Resources Kulthida Plengsang said this camp empowers youth to become agents of change for the world.

He said that Suntory's global mission is to "create harmony with nature".
