Kids 'scared to sleep' in case fire damaged house next door 'caves in'

A mum-of-two said her kids are 'scared to sleep' after a fire hit their neighbour's home and left it 'structurally unsafe'

Kate Reeves, 38, said following the fire, which blew out the windows next door, she was told the house would be covered up and made safe.

However, the Kirkdale mum said she is 'disgusted' that a week on Torus housing have made no efforts to start repairs on the property.

She told the ECHO: "Day five and nobody has been to the property, all of the stuff that had fell out of the window is still on the floor.

"[Torus are] dealing with nothing. They haven't been out, they're not responding to anybody's phone calls.

"Nobody has been near the property at all. Nobody has made it safe or taken anything that's hanging from it."

Kate said her home was damaged in the blaze and after the fire her children were scared to go to sleep in case the house next door caved in.

She added: "I've got holes in my loft [from the fire] which could cause more damage to my property.

"I'm constantly hearing bangs because it's not structurally safe. We got told that that roof could fall in at any time.

"For the first couple of days my kids were scared to sleep because we didn't know if the house was going to cave in.

"My little boy went to stay in his granddads, me and my daughter had to sleep on the couch.

"Even now the smell of fire is very strong."

Kate said she is constantly cleaning up debris coming from the house, due to their being no boards attached to the blown out windows, and feels sorry for her neighbour.

She added: "Every single day I brush my path and every single day there are more bits that have fell off from that house.

"The lady that lived there was on oxygen, up until [April 21] that oxygen has been just left on the step.

"We got told that if the fire had spread to the room where the oxygen was, the whole street would have been taken out."

Kate claims her neighbour has been rehoused in a bungalow, under the impression that her longtime residence is being repaired, although she claims not to have seen any sign of work on the house so far.

She said: "I just think it's appalling, she's lived in the house for over 50 years!

"She doesn't even know what's gone on, she thinks that there's work getting done on it.

"The way they were treated was absolutely disgusting, there was no empathy at all.

A spokesperson for Torus told the ECHO: "Torus is aware that the fire at [an address on] Argos Place on Tuesday 13th April resulted in substantial damage to the property and also had an impact on adjacent homes.

"Once the fire had been extinguished, Torus sent a surveyor and structural engineer to assess the state of the property and its structural stability.

"In line with our comprehensive fire and building safety protocols, we then instructed a contractor to commence ‘make safe’ works and made separate arrangements to rehouse the Torus tenant in suitable temporary accommodation nearby.

"On this occasion, the instruction to commence timely make safe works did not result in the prompt installation of scaffolding on site.

"We are investigating why this delay has happened and are taking urgent action to resolve the issue.

"A structural surveyor visited Argos Place today to assess [the address] and neighbouring properties.

"We will prioritise work to make the property safe, so that a full structural survey can be completed promptly.

"We will also assess consequential damage to adjacent homes and work closely with neighbouring residents to resolve outstanding issues.

"Building safety is an overriding priority at Torus.

"Our ‘safety plus’ approach is designed to ensure a quick and efficient response to each and every fire safety incident that arises."
