Kids raise £1000 to help friend battling cancer raise money for garden

The St John Ogilvie Primary early years class put their best foot forward at a welly wander to raise money for their little friend’s garden fund.

Classmate Eli Abercrombie, 3, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia which has weakened his immune system – rendering him isolated from other youngsters at nursery.

So far the pupils have raised around £1000 – a brilliant sum – which will be going to help give Eli a safe space to play outside while he battles cancer.

Eli’s little sister Aria, mum, gran, aunties and two cousins joined the class on their walk.

Nicola Thompson, Eli’s mum, said: “The kids did absolutely amazing.

“It was quite a trek for their little legs as well and they all just did fantastic.

“Eli and all of his family want to say a big thank you to his classmates.

“It’s so exciting knowing he’ll have a place to play soon.”

G’s Landscapes, based in Glasgow, read the Irvine Herald story on Eli’s garden fund and selflessly decided to spruce up the back door for free.

Meanwhile Eli’s family have been hard at work clearing the garden in ready for its new look.

Work on Eli’s garden is set to commence in June.

Our photographer Steve McKendrick joined the class on their walk and captured all of the best moments from the day.
