Kids left out in the cold after snow hits some school bus runs across Lanarkshire

Children across Lanarkshire struggled to get to school this morning after the snow forced bus operators to cancel some runs.

Dozens of children from Bothwell and Uddingston were left out in the cold after their school buses failed to turn up.

Some youngsters heading to Holy Cross High in Hamilton were left waiting after school buses were unable to get out their depot, due to the heavy snow last night.

Parents received a text today at 8.45am alerting them to the fact that there would be no buses running.

It explained: “No Whitelaws or McDades buses will be running today unfortunately due to road closure at depot.”

A mum of one Holy Cross pupil told the Advertiser: “My child left the house at 8am for his bus to school which usually collects him at 8.10am or thereabouts.

“At half past he called to say the bus hadn’t turned up and lots of kids had returned home as they were freezing.

“I also heard reports of a bad accident on Bothwell Road heading towards the school so in the end told my child just to come home.”

Meanwhile in North Lanarkshire, Halls coaches are also not able to operate their service to pupils at Knowetop Primary School in Motherwell due to the weather.

The service usually operates to Chestnut Grove, Airbles Farm Road and Greenacres.

South Lanarkshire council have been tweeting this morning and said: “Schools update at 9.20am: We are currently assessing the position with the opening of schools in Clydesdale this morning . A further update will be provided at around 10am,”

And also:  “Strathaven Academy also has a delayed start, opening at 10am .”

North Lanarkshire Council tweeted: “Due to the weather we are experiencing a number of issues with school transport this morning.

“However, it’s important to note that all schools are open today (Friday 4 December 2020).”
