Kids late for school and commuters sitting in huge queues as major road closed

The closure of a major road has caused CHAOS among commuters and schoolchildren.

Sefton Council has closed Edge Lane in Netherton while 'vital improvements' take place.

But a lot of drivers aren't happy with their decision to close the road at this time of year - and for eight weeks.

People have flocked to social media to bemoan heavy congestion caused by Edge Lane being closed in both directions.

Jenny Quinn said: "My kids were 30 minutes late for school after sitting on the school bus for 90 minutes!"

Gary Waring said: "It took me an hour to get from town to Crosby last night, and then there were long queues going into town again this morning."

Luke Causer called the closure a 'joke' and said he had to travel to Aintree to avoid sitting in stationary traffic.

One woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, compared nearby Runnells Lane to a 'race track'. She continued: "Lydiate Lane is flooded as well with all the rain. There is going to be a very serious smash.

"It’s a narrow country lane with parked cars on either side, as well as a bus route, but we now have the 63 travelling along up and down as well as the 54.

"We’ve also got the HGVs up and down to and from the building developments.

"We have always been a lane for dog walkers as well, but they’ll be taking their life in their hands.

"Please find another route, it’s bedlam."

The improvement works will include the completion of the new left hand turning lane on Buckley Hill Lane and general works to help enhance pedestrian facilities at the junction.

Contractors began the works on October 28 and are expected to complete the second stage of improvements around December 20.

Phased improvement works are set to restart at the junction of Buckley Hill Lane and Edge Lane, Netherton to benefit traffic flow in the area.

A spokesman for Sefton Council said: "This will require the closure of Edge Lane at its junction with Buckley Hill Lane in both directions for 8 weeks, with a diversion via Broom’s Cross Road.

"However we are making sure that adequate diversions and signage are to be in place during this closure to help reduce delays.”
