Kids killed in botched robbery to get 'headstone they deserve' as Govan bids to raise cash

Residents in the Govan area have launched a campaign to give two local schoolchildren who were killed over 40 years ago 'headstones they deserve' to help ensure that their memory lives on.

Siblings John and Irene McMonigle, aged 13 and 12, died in their own home during a botched break-in in a crime that shocked the nation back in 1976.

At the High Court in May of that year, Alex Millar admitted culpable homicide on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was ordered to be detained without limit of time. He has been held in secure units ever since.

Local Facebook group Acumfaegovan have set up the fundraiser for the headstones, with kind-hearted locals raising over £900 of a £1,500 target so far.

The fundraiser reads: "As many people in Govan will remember the horrifying story of John and Irene McGonigle who were killed in January 1976. The community of Govan would like to ensure that these children’s memory lives on and give them a headstone that they deserve.

"This was discussed by a lot of the community in Govan to raise funds for this to happen.

"We do have the family's permission to raise this money for John and Irene, but it was us that approached them and not them that approached us. Thank you for reading this and any donation would be gratefully appreciated."
