Kids hospitalised and 'dropping like flies' after outbreak at holiday park

At least 40 children have been taken ill and some hospitalised after a sickness outbreak at a holiday park in Cornwall.

One mum has described the scene as "horrific" and claimed "kids are dropping like flies".

An investigation is now underway to pinpoint the cause however Mullion Holiday Park chiefs believe the illness originated off site, reports Cornwall Live.

The mum, who did not want to be named, said: “At least two kids have been taken to hospital via ambulance.

"It’s horrific. They are booking new people without even telling them as I have witnessed that myself.

“Refunds are being refused but staff are doing the best they can. They are saying it’s gastro. The outbreak started massively last night but there are a few reports from the last five days."

The woman added that a three-year-old has been taken to hospital now, while another child from a different family is already at Royal Cornwall Hospital.

She described being stranded and unable to go home through fear of infecting other family members.

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service confirmed they had been called to the holiday park.

They said: “We were called at around 10.25am about an incident in a caravan at a holiday park near Helston . We sent a senior paramedic and an ambulance crew to attend the incident.

“As the incident didn’t take place in a public area, we cannot provide any further details.”

A spokesperson for Mullion holiday park said they have contacted health watchdogs over the incident.

They said: “We are carrying out an investigation after a group of guests at our park have become ill.

"We immediately contacted Public Health England and the EHO, and are co-operating with them fully to look after our guests and limit the spread of any virus.

“We have strict food hygiene standards and we are working with the authorities to identify the source.

"From our initial conversations with Public Health England, the most likely explanation is that the illness was brought onto the park, rather than originating on-site.”
