Kids can get FREE open water swim safe sessions this summer 2019

Kids can once again join in FREE open water swim safety sessions at Salford Quays this summer.

Hundreds of children have benefited from the classes, which have run over the last two summers.

This year there'll be 1,000 free one-hour sessions up for grabs for kids aged seven to 14 - including school groups.

And each child that takes part gets a Swim Safe cap and a badge to take home too.

Launching to coincide with Drowning Prevention Week , it's all part of Salford Community Leisure’s Swim Safe campaign and classes are held at the Helly Hansen Watersports Centre in Salford Quays between July 29 and August 30.

Swim Safe, from Swim England, is run by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and involves kids learning land-based water safety before getting into the water for practical tuition with a fully qualified swimming teacher.

Sessions run from 9.45am to 10.45am, 11.15am to 12.15pm and 12.45pm to 1.45pm on July 29 and 31 and August 2, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 21, 23, 26, 28 and 30.

Over the last two years the Swim Safe sessions have been booked up soon after slots were released, but some families failed to attend, meaning those spaces were wasted.

Organisers are encouraging those who book to cancel if they realise they can no longer attend.

Marie Leather, sport and leisure manager for aquatic and health and fitness at Salford Community Leisure, said: 'We are delighted to host the Swim Safe Swim England and RNLI sessions at the Helly Hansen Watersports Centre for a third year running.

"The sessions are very popular and we'd urge people to make sure that they 'unbook' their places if for any reason they change their minds and can't attend as this frees-up a vital space for another child to learn about how to stay safe in open water, and what to do if something goes wrong."

To book your Swim Safe session visit swimsafe.org.uk . The sessions are one of many free or affordable summer activities for families in Salford. Full information is available here .

To take part, children must be able to swim a minimum of 25 metres. This is usually achieved around Stage 4 of Swim England's Learn to Swim Pathway.
