Kidnap bid on block development committee member: Kin killed

LUCKNOW: A 65-year-old man, brother-in-law of a block development committee (BDC) member, was allegedly beaten to death when he tried to resist the abduction of his relative in Bahraich during the wee hours of Friday.

Police have arrested four persons and efforts are on to nab another accused who is on the run. Cops said the stringent National Security Act (NSA) would be invoked against the accused. SHO, Kherighat, Vimlesh Kumar Singh has been suspended for laxity.

Superintendent of police, Bahraich, Sujata Singh said that the victim, Mayaram, was the brother-in-law of a BDC member, Yadurai Devi. “Around 2am on Friday, Sudhir Yagyasaini, whose wife Sarita is a block pramukh candidate, barged into Yadurai Devi’s house with his supporters and a gunner, and tried to abduct her allegedly with the intention to get her vote in favour of his wife in block pramukh elections on Saturday. When Mayaram intervened, he was thrashed by Sudhir and his associates,” Singh said. Hearing the screams, villagers rushed to the spot following which Sudhir and his aides escaped. Mayaram was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“A manhunt was launched and Sudhir and his three aides were arrested. They have been booked for murder, rioting and under other relevant sections,” Singh said. She said the gunner accompanying Sudhir has been suspended and NSA would be invoked against the accused.
