Kickstart your fitness drive with this year's Virtual Balloch Shortbread Run

Locals looking to start 2021 off on the right foot are being invited to take part in this year’s virtual Shortbread Run.

The event, which traditionally takes place on January 2, is now in its 10th running – giving residents the chance to kickstart their New Year health drive, by walking, jogging or running two miles around Balloch Castle Country Park, with Walkers Shortbread on offer as a reward at the finish.

However with gatherings on hold this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, organisers West Dunbartonshire Athletics Club are asking people to take part virtually instead.

Committee member Maurice Donohue said: “With all matters surrounding Covid-19, the event has now embraced the virtual world.

“You can kick start your New Year’s resolution to get fit and active by going that extra mile or two to be precise and you don’t even need to leave your house.

“A two mile distance is on average around 4000 steps, so you can complete the distance at your leisure and within the comfort of your home.

“Walkers Shortbread are delighted to continue their association and support for the event, hoping that we will be able to get back to normality for 2022, where participants would receive a well-earned piece of Walkers Shortbread after completing the route.

“As long as we follow the current Covid-19 guidelines and procedures, thus ensuring safety for all, we’re aiming to host this virtual event and celebrate the run’s 10th anniversary.

“Just remember to put the kettle on and have a piece of shortbread to hand, when you have completed your 4000 steps!”
