FORT WORTH, Texas _ Three missed field goals off the foot of Brandon Hatfield were too much for TCU to overcome Saturday, when points were surprisingly at a premium in a 27-24 double-overtime loss to Texas Tech (4-4, 2-3 Big 12) at Amon G. Carter Stadium. Hatfield missed from 39 and 32 yards during regulation before missing from 37 in double-overtime. That allowed kicker Clayton Hatfield to take the glory on the ensuing Tech try in double-overtime with a 37-yarder of his own
After struggling on his first three offensive series behind center for TCU (4-4, 2-3 Big 12), Sawyer placed a 25-yard touchdown pass right in Desmon White's breadbasket on the second play of the Horned Frogs' possession in the first overtime period to tie the game at 24-24. Sawyer ended the night 6 of 17 for 86 yards and a touchdown, while starter Kenny Hill went 16 of 29 for 160 yards and an interception.
Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes picked his spot to cap the Red Raiders' four-play possession in the first overtime period, motoring through a cavernous hole at the line of scrimmage when only five TCU defenders lined up anywhere close to the ball. His 15-yard touchdown run gave Tech its first lead of the game, 24-17.
Texas Tech tied the game, 17-17, on Mahomes' 8-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Cantrell with 1:28 left to play. Sawyer's third series behind center stalled to follow, forcing overtime for the second time this season.
TCU took a 17-10 lead with 14:37 left to play on Trevorris Johnson's one-yard touchdown run. The Horned Frogs took advantage of the short field Tech gave TCU when punter Michael Barden dropped what looked to be a good snap late in the third.
TCU linebacker Sammy Douglas made the hit on Barden to give the Frogs possession at the Tech 15-yard line.
