Kicker Evan McPherson’s Super Bowl LVI MVP odds are long, but not outrageous

One week is officially in the books, which means there is only one more to go before February 13’s Super Bowl LVI. And as the eventful week-long lead-up ensues, I felt as though it was my personal responsibility as a sports media person to come up with as many fake media day questions as I could. For the sake of my credibility, I ditched the ridiculous ones (you’re welcome).

However, there is one question that I’m somewhat serious about. That is — could a kicker actually win Super Bowl LVI MVP? More specifically, could Evan McPherson actually win Super Bowl LVI MVP?

The Super Bowl MVP has never gone to a kicker. It’s the quarterback’s award to lose, quite honestly. And with the storylines behind Joe Burrow’s (+220 MVP odds at Tipico Sportsbook) and Matthew Stafford’s (+100) seasons, it likely wouldn’t take any ridiculous number for either to take home the Pete Rozelle Trophy. But ridiculous receiving numbers from Ja’Marr Chase (+1500) or Cooper Kupp (+600) almost certainly would do the job.

Then there’s former Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller (+4000), Odell Beckham Jr. (+2000) and a list of other high-profile players who have longshot odds at earning the game’s MVP. You get the point. There is a long line of players you could rattle off that would land a Super Bowl MVP award before Evan McPherson. And while that may be the case, can you really count out the 2022 NFL Postseason’s leading scorer?

McPherson has connected on all 12 of his field-goal attempts (four in each game) and all four of his extra points through Cincinnati’s three playoff victories for a total of 40 points. Those kicks include three 50-plus yarders and two straight walk-off game-winners. So, yes — a kicker winning the Super Bowl MVP is unlikely, but who’s to say another four-FG game and walk-off winner wouldn’t at least make the notion feasible? There’s a first time for everything.

Evan McPherson has +6000 Super Bowl LVI MVP odds at Tipico Sportsbook.
