Kickboxing club appeals for tournament donations

Students from a Renfrew kickboxing club have been selected to represent Scotland at a tournament are looking for donations.

The group of Scotland representatives from RMKB will compete in the WKC World Championships in Killarney, Ireland, in October.

The seven students who have been chosen to go and represent the nation at the prestigious tournament will be looking to come out on top of the 90-plus countries who are attending.

Carys McMaster (21) Mia McMaster (16) Robert Sichim (21) Jack McFaite (12) Kyle MaClean (16) Olivia McCallum (7) & Max Davis (7) all attend the kickboxing club in Renfrew on Manse Street.

The championship is deemed to be one of the toughest to compete in making it a strong, but exciting challenge for these students to test themselves against.

Robert McCallum, the founder of the kickboxing school, has achieved World, European, British, Scottish and Regional Championship titles, as well as producing multiple World, European, British and Scottish champions.

He said: “This is a fantastic achievement for every student taking part and to be involved in.

"The students are going from strength to strength and improving all the time and this selection has proven that with hard work, commitment and application, anything can be achieved.

“This will be the first time for the students to fight at such a prestigious event and every one of them will love and cherish the experience. It will be a great competition to be involved in and our guys will take lots of experience from it.”

Although the students are excited to have been selected to represent Scotland at the tournament, the sport of kickboxing is one of the few sports that is not funded.

All the expenses for the trips, including the fighting suits, hotels and entry fees are all expected to be raised by the athletes and their families.

This has resulted in Robert starting a GoFundMe that will allow people to send donations that will help the martial art students. He has described this as a “once in a lifetime” opportunity for the students and one that he doesn’t want them missing out on.

Currently, donations sit at just over £900, with the target being £5,000 by October. If you would like to donate, you can do so online at https://bit.ly/3JSWgvV
