'Kick-in-the-teeth' Council Tax rise could hit millions of families in England in weeks

Sky-high Council Tax bills of more than £2,000 could be on the way for millions of families in April.

Critics have described the expected rise for Band D houses in more than a quarter of districts as a “kick in the teeth” to struggling households, reports the Daily Star.

The government gives local authorities the ability to raise their bills by up to five per cent so they can meet the rising costs of social care, while a further £15 can be added by police authorities.

A rise in line with last year’s increase to council tax bills of four per cent, would see an additional 59 districts asking for more than £2,000.

This would mean 95 districts in total – more than a quarter – will issue Band D bills above £2,000.

Harry Fone, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: “These sky-high bills will feel like a kick in the teeth to taxpayers.

“The pandemic has destroyed many households’ finances - the last thing they need is an even bigger council tax bill.

“Local authorities must root out wasteful spending, make savings and stop these huge hikes.”

Steve Reed, the shadow communities secretary, says the government is choosing to “clobber” hard-working families.
