Ki Sung-yueng tries to explain Newcastle United's dips in form this season - and fires early warning to title chasing Liverpool

Ki Sung-yueng hopes that Newcastle United can avoid any accusations of winding down early for the season ahead of their clash on the South Coast this weekend.

That was the case 12 months ago when United secured their Premier League place before losing four successive games against Everton, West Brom, Watford and Tottenham Hotspur.

Ki wasn't at United back then, but has vowed to approach the final three matches of the campaign with the right approach.

Games against Brighton, title contenders Liverpool and relegated Fulham are still to come for United.

Ki told the Chronicle: "We're safe. But we have another target now, that is to get maximum points from the last three games.

"Then maybe we can stay around mid-table, or maybe 10th.

"It is not impossible. We just want to concentrate on every game now.

"We can go for it as we are safe."

However, United will come face to face with a Brighton side who are still threatened by the prospect of relegation.

Ki said: "They are dangerous opponents.

"They know they have to win to survive so it will be very difficult, but we're not afraid.

"We keep going and maintain our performance levels from the last two weeks.

"We will give everything again.

"We have to be ready for them."

Rafa Benitez insists he is not happy with mid-table mediocrity for Newcastle United next season

Ki knows that United have been very much a Jekyll and Hyde team in the Premier League this season.

Indeed, they are the only side to beat Manchester City in 2019 but they are also capable of erratic results such as a 0-0 draw at home to Fulham or slipping up to Crystal Palace.

In trying to explain the inconsistent pattern, Ki said: "It depends on us and if we give everything on the pitch.

"If we do then we know we can do it.

"If we relax we could lose our concentration.

"In a Premier League game that can happen.

"Hopefully the boys will concentrate on the last games of the season."

Ki is also aiming to sign off for the season with at least one goal to his name.

The former South Korea skipper is desperate to get off the mark after coming close in the last few weeks.

He cracked the base of the post against Southampton and couldn't believe his bad luck in the 3-1 win at St James' Park.

Ki said: "I was a bit disappointed that didn't go in but we won the game and got three massive points.

"I think we have maintained our winning form.

"I am very pleased with all the players and the recent performances."
