KHON KAEN: Two more field hospitals will be opened in Khon Kaen province to cope with new Covid-19 infections, raising the total to three, governor Somsak Jangtrakul said on Tuesday.

Mr Somsak said a meeting of the provincial communicable disease committee on Monday agreed on the need to open the second and third hospitals after about 300 new Covid-19 cases were found during the past few days.

One would be at the Isan Buddhist Diocese and the other at the Tha Phra Agriculture Office in tambon Tha Phra, both in Muang district.

The province's first field hospital for Covid-19 patients is at a dormitory in Khon Kaen University and was opened in April.

The governor said about 300 new infections had been detected in recent days. The patients were infected at social functions such as funerals and merit-making.

In a bid to contain the surge in Covid-19 cases the province had also stepped up vaccination rates, he said.
