The head of Sudan’s transitional Sovereign Council, Lt. Gen. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan, held talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on ways to consolidate bilateral relations and cooperation during a two-day visit to Ethiopia this week.
“The visit affirmed the importance of cooperation and coordination on the joint border, development and security,” the Sudanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Burhan concluded on Tuesday his official visit to Ethiopia in response to an invitation extended by Abiy Ahmed.
Their talks tackled ways to consolidate bilateral relations and cooperation between Sudan and Ethiopia.
Sudanese acting Foreign Minister Omer Gamar-Eddin said the visit achieved its objectives, indicating that Burhan has visited a number of industrial and agricultural areas in several Ethiopian regions.
He said that the two sides have exchanged views on several issues deemed important for the two countries and the region.
Burhan and Ahmed also underscored their firm relations and the importance of further consolidating them for the interest of the two peoples.
The talks came as the two countries have witnessed a series of cross-border incidents and security tensions.
In June, Ethiopian army-backed militias launched an attack on a Sudanese military camp on the border with Ethiopia.
A similar operation took place last May when Ethiopian militias attacked a Sudanese army site in a border area, killing an officer.
