Khalil Mack is learning a lot from new DC Chuck Pagano

New Bears defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano hasn’t been in Chicago for long, but he’s been impressed with what he’s seen from his players so far. And the same can be said for his players, who have been soaking in everything Pagano’s been throwing at them.

As far as praise, there’s no higher praise than All-Pro linebacker Khalil Mack. And he’s got plenty of it.

“You look at his resume, he’s worked with some of the greatest of all-time,” Mack told reporters following Wednesday’s OTA practice. “Just learning from him and understanding football through his eyes has been very beneficial for me.”

Mack aspires to be one of the best to ever play the game. So working with Pagano, someone who has worked with some of the best, has certainly been valuable.

Mack, who was acquired by the Bears last September in a blockbuster trade with the Raiders, had an immediate impact on Chicago’s defense. Mack posted 12.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and a pick-six in 14 regular-season games in 2018.

Pagano replaces Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator for a defense that was one of the best in the NFL. While there’s no feeling of a fallout on defense, Pagano is implementing a new defensive scheme that will take time to master.

But with the talent in place — both players and coaches — the Bears are expected to continue their defensive dominance.
