Man City make Khadija Shaw 'world's highest-paid player' after Chelsea U-turn

Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw will be staying at Manchester City, having signed a new long-term contract at the club.

Standard Sport understands that Chelsea held a strong interest in the Women’s Super League top goalscorer, whose contract had been due to expire at the end of the season, targeting her as a replacement for the outgoing Sam Kerr. London City Lionesses were also interested.

Shaw was expected to swap Manchester for west London, but in a surprise U-turn has now signed a four-year contract extension.

The Guardian report that the terms of the comfortably exceeds those on offer by Chelsea, with Shaw now comfortably the highest-paid player in the women’s game.

The Jamaica international has hit 21 league goals in 22 appearances this season, picking up the golden boot as she fired City to their first WSL title since 2016.

Shaw announced the news herself at City’s parade at the Co-Op Live Arena, upon receiving the club’s player of the year award.

“I’m still here,” she told the thousands of fans gathered.

“I’m still hungry, and there’s no place I’d rather be. I’m happy to announce that I’ll be staying at the football club.”

She told the club website: “I’m so happy to be at this incredible club for another four years.

“I’ve always said that Manchester City feels like home – I’ve developed so much as a player and grown so much as a person during my first five years here.

“Helping the girls win the WSL title is one of the proudest moments of my career, and I’m so excited to see what we can do next season and beyond.”

Shaw could yet help City claim a domestic double this season as she braces to lead the line against Brighton in the FA Cup final on Sunday, May 31.

With her future still in the balance earlier this month, the striker struck two decisive late goals as City came from behind to knock Chelsea out of the FA Cup semi-final, equalising in the 91st minute before hitting an extra-time winner.

It remains to be seen where the Blues, who ultimately finished six points adrift of champions City, will look to replace the prolific goalscorer Kerr.
