Khabib Nurmagomedov's touching tribute to his late father after coronavirus death

Khabib Nurmagomedov has spoken about his father's death for the first time since his passing from coronavirus.

Abdulmanap, who also served as one of his son's coaches, endured a prolonged battle with Covid-19 and was twice placed in a coma.

The 57-year-old eventually succumbed to the virus having been transferred to a military hospital in Moscow.

And his son, the UFC's lightweight champion, has taken to Instagram to pay tribute.

"Father, you will be missed," he wrote.

"You were a father, friend, brother and coach in one person. You taught me almost everything that I know. I hope you were pleased with me."

Nurmagomedov's death has understandably thrown his son's career into doubt with the 155lb ruler due to take on Justin Gaethje in September.

That fight looks set to be put back until at least October, but Nurmagomedov's manager insists it will happen.

“Khabib is not retiring,” Ali Abdelaziz said. “Khabib has some goals, he has some things he wants to accomplish. You will see him before the end of the year.

"Now him and Dana [White] are talking and me talking to the matchmakers and we’ll try to set a date. I’m sure Dana is gonna let everybody know when Khabib is gonna fight.

"We have a blockbuster main event, him versus Justin Gaethje, two of the best lightweights in the world today and the recent era.

"We see what Khabib does to all his opponents. We see what Justin Gaethje did his last four opponents. He dismantled Tony Ferguson. He made him look like an absolute amateur and that’s the best two guys in the world. They’re gonna fight."
