Khabib Nurmagomedov's coach opens door to Conor McGregor rematch with honest statement

Khabib Nurmagomedov's coach Javier Mendez has admitted that the Russian and his team have no control over who he will fight next.

The lightweight champion has repeatedly dismissed talk of a potential McGregor rematch recently.

However, his coach has said that it is ultimately UFC bosses who will make the final call.

UFC President Dana White is keen to arrange the megabucks rematch and has said that McGregor will face the winner of Khabib's fight with Tony Ferguson at UFC 249.

Mendez admits it is in their hands, telling MMA Junkie: “Let’s not be naive and think that we’re in control.

"We’re not in control. We can control what we do, but the organization controls who you fight and who you don’t fight."

White has been outspoken in his desire to tee up a rematch that would lead to a huge windfall for his organisation.

"Khabib and Tony will fight in Brooklyn,” White said. “And Conor will probably fight the winner of that fight.”

Despite the massive payday that lies in store, undefeated ace Khabib insists he has no intention of taking McGregor on again in the near future.

"If he wins 10 fights in a row, then that’s completely possible," Khabib said.

“I decide who I’m going to fight next. To fight me he has to cut weight first, down to 155 pounds, and win ten fights in a row like I did.

"Then we’ll think about a rematch. But for now he can fight second rate fighters who lose seven out of ten fights at 170 pounds."
