Conor McGregor retirement: Khabib Nurmagomedov breaks silence on shock announcement

Khabib Nurmagomedov once again taunted Conor McGregor after his bitter UFC rival announced his retirement from the sport.

The Irishman, who finishes with 21-4 record, said on his Twitter account on Tuesday morning that he had decided to call it a day and wished his former colleagues well.

Former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion McGregor, 30, returned to the octagon last October after a hiatus of nearly two years where he fought Nurmagomedov for the lightweight strap.

The Russian retained his UFC lightweight title when he beat McGregor with a fourth-round submission but the event was marred by a post-fight brawl which led to both fighters being fined and suspended.

There’s obviously no love lost between the pair, and Khabib reignited their feud by reminding McGregor of their previous bout.

Posting a picture with his belt, the UFC star wrote: “There can be only one king in the jungle. Only one.”

McGregor made a losing return to the UFC in October 2018 after tapping out to long-term rival Nurmagomedov on another controversial night.

The Irishman made his comeback after nearly two years away but was thoroughly outclassed by Nurmagomedov, whose rear-naked choke forced a submission midway through the fourth round in Las Vegas.

Immediately after McGregor tapped out, Nurmagomedov taunted his rival, threw his gum shield and jumped over the cage before flinging himself to attack a member of the Irishman's team.

While this was occurring, McGregor was set upon by at least two alleged members of Nurmagomedov's entourage.

And that looks set to be the last time McGregor will step foot in the octagon as a fighter, after he announced his retirement in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

He posted on Twitter: "Hey guys quick announcement, I've decided to retire from the sport formally known as "Mixed Martial Art" today.

"I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement.

"Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!"
