KFC wants to create 26 new outlets in the East Midlands

Fast food giant KFC wants to open 26 new restaurants and drive thrus in the East Midlands as part of a drive to increase its footprint across the UK.

It is understood the chain is offering incentives of £20,000 to people who find a new site in their target areas, which includes Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Lincoln.

The KFC concept was first introduced to the UK in 1965 with its first branch in Preston, but today it operates 850 outlets in the country.

A spokesman for the company said: "We have bold ambitions to have over 1,000 stores in the UK and Ireland by 2020 and we are looking to build over 50 new stores a year."

Also among the fried chicken group's wish list is the intu Broadmarsh in Nottingham, which is currently undergoing a multi-million pound regeneration.

When complete in 2021 the centre, which will be glass fronted, will be a leisure destination with Hollywood Bowl, Light Cinema, shops and restaurants.

The company remains tight-lipped on potential shops coming into the new-look centre.
