KFC to launch vegan chicken burger

After the success of the Greggs sausage roll this year, KFC is the latest chain to jump on board the vegan train with its latest offering.

They have developed a Quorn burger - called 'the Imposter' - in a classic bun, served with lettuce and vegan mayo.

KFC have called it a "triumph of deception" as they replicate the Original Recipe burger, but without any animal products.

Like KFC's other offerings, the Imposter burger is prepared in their secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices - the first time the recipe has been used on something other than chicken.

The burger is being trialled in stores from June 17 to July 15, before the company decides whether to roll it out nationally or not.

After the initial trial they will be testing out another veggie option called the 'Souther Fritter Stacker' which is a mixture of crispy vegetables served as a wrap or with rice.

'Colonel would be proud'

Victoria Robertson, Chief Vegetable Enthusiast at KFC UK & Ireland, said: “We know… it’s unfair. Vegans have been cruelly denied the incredible taste of KFC up to now, which is why we’ve worked hard to perfect The Imposter – a vegan burger that the Colonel would be proud of.”

Tony Davison, Head of Global Foodservice & QSR at Quorn commented: “A vegan KFC? We couldn’t believe it either.

"But we’ve done it – working with KFC we’ve created a bespoke Quorn fillet that does the Colonel’s recipe justice. We have no doubt that KFC fans are going to love the modern take on a finger lickin’ favourite.”

Dawn Carr, Director of Vegan Corporate Projects at PETA, said: "We’ve been so excited to hear about this and play a part in KFC’s journey to reaching this game-changing new vegan range. We're confident it will be a huge hit with the skyrocketing numbers of vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians around the UK. Clucking marvellous!"

The Imposter burger will cost £2.99 or £3.49 with a drink.

If you want it in wrap form with a drink it's going to set you back £3.99, or as a salad with a drink it is £3.79.
