KAMAKURA, Kanagawa -- A Kentucky Fried Chicken shop in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, is attracting attention because its statue of company icon Colonel Sanders is wearing Japanese armor.

A citizens group, Kamakura Mononofutai (Kamakura samurai squad), re-created armor that was used from the Heian period (794 to the late 12th century) to the Kamakura period (late 12th century to 1333), made with animal skins. It took about four months for the squad to complete the work, combining about 2,000 pieces of resin in place of animal skin.

The statue also has a face mask in light of the novel coronavirus pandemic. But with his signature white beard hidden, one poster on a social networking site said, "I don't know who he is anymore."

A member of group said, "Come to see the samurai colonel in Kamakura."
