KFC re-opens 11 stores for deliveries after nationwide closure - and says they will be followed by more

Fast food giant KFC has re-opened some of its stores for deliveries with a skeleton staff and limited menu.

Just three weeks ago, restaurants including KFC and McDonalds made the decision to close their branches as the UK entered lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic

However, 11 of KFC's stores are now up and running again for deliveries only in cities such as Manchester, Portsmouth and Glasgow, despite the ongoing lockdown.

More restaurants are set to open over the next few weeks, the company said.

The company's bosses said 'there’s still a need for affordable, accessible food' and added there's measures in place to protect staff members.

KFC has also said that thousands of free meals are being donated to NHS and key workers across the country.

A spokesperson said: “Over the last week, we’ve reopened 11 of our restaurants in the UK.

"They’re open for delivery only and are serving a limited menu, operated by fewer team members with new procedures in place to help ensure we’re following social distancing guidelines.

"There’s still a need for affordable, accessible food at this time - so we want to do our part.

"We’ve also donated thousands of meals from all our open restaurants to those on the frontline, including the NHS and key workers, in partnership with Deliveroo, and will continue to do so each week whilst the situation continues.

"We’re looking at additional restaurants to open over the next few weeks but if we can’t do it responsibly – we won’t do it all.

The KFC spokesperson continued: "The safety of our teams is a top priority for us and we’d never ask them to work in an environment which made them feel uncomfortable.

"Their returning to work is on an opt-in basis, and only those who can travel to work without the use of public transport have been asked to return.

"We’ve implemented a number of measures to observe social distancing in these restaurants. This includes placing tape on the floor to create designated working zones two metres apart and operating with just one person per station and fewer team members.

"Serving a limited menu will also help keep things simple and prevent the need for team members to cross stations. Team members packing the orders are also wearing gloves."
