KFC is planning to open a brand new restaurant in Manchester city centre

KFC is eyeing up a new Manchester restaurant, with plans submitted to open in the heart of the city centre.

The fast food giant has submitted a planning application for a unit on Piccadilly, on the fringes of the Northern Quarter.

If approved, it will see the brand take over the former Wok & Go site near Piccadilly train station.

The plans are to open the new takeaway site at 83 Piccadilly, a grade II-listed building close to Piccadilly Gardens.

It will join three other KFC sites in Manchester city centre, with branches already open at the Arndale, on Deansgate, and on Oxford Road.

This particular location was on KFC's ambitious list of sites it wants to open in Greater Manchester, released last year.

The fried chicken restaurant said it was also targeting new openings at Victoria station, Piccadilly station, and Oxford Road station.

Other destinations it wants to expand to included Altrincham, Sale, Oldham, Rochdale, and Didsbury, to name a few.

If it does open all 18 sites suggested, it could create around 500 jobs for the region.

KFCs across the UK have been closed during the coronavirus pandemic, but are beginning to reopen for takeaways.

This has included Manchester's Deansgate restaurant, as well as many drive-thrus.

The planning application for the new Piccadilly restaurant is in consultation until June 25.
