KFC could bring vegan nuggets and wings to its UK restaurants

With the advent of the vegan favourites like the Greggs' vegan sausage roll and more plant based versions of the menu on the way, KFC has become the latest to throw its hat in the ring.

The chicken fast food giant is currently trialling something a little different in its US restaurants.

The chain is testing out vegan versions of chicken nuggets and spicy wings, reports The Mirror.

It is hoped that, if the new menu items are successful, they will soon roll out the alternative takeaway options worldwide.

According to KFC, the fast food chain's plant-based derivatives will be made using popular meat substitute company Beyond Meat, alongside the tagline “a Kentucky fried miracle”.

Beyond Meat is also responsible for vegan-friendly menu items at other US fast food chains, such as Carl's Jr. and Del Taco, and you can also buy their plant-based wares in supermarkets, with Tesco currently selling two Beyond Meat burgers , although they'll set you back a hefty £5.50.

The news follows the soaring success of their Imposter burger - a completely vegan, fake chicken burger that's made using bespoke Quorn, although there are some major differences between the two launches.

Whilst KFC's Imposter burger was road tested over four weeks in select London restaurants, the fried chicken brand's vegan nuggets and wings have instead been put through a very limited one day trial, in which free samples of the nuggets were handed out to customers in Atlanta, Georgia.

And according to  Veg News,  the trial amassed so much interest that KFC ran out of the vegan nuggets in just five hours.

There's no word on where or when the vegan wing trial will be, but we hope they announce it soon so we can book our flights...

The experimental nuggets are being presented in green containers (rather than KFC's trademark red), with a promise that what's inside is still “still finger lickin’ good” being plastered over each cardboard box.

According to The Guardian, Kevin Hochman, the chief concept officer of KFC US, claimed that the new recipe would mean customers would “find it difficult to tell” the nuggets were plant-based.

The fried chicken experts announced the news on its Twitter page, with a picture of the new treats and a caption reading: "It’s Kentucky Fried Chicken but it’s made with @BeyondMeat.

"It’s confusing, but it’s also delicious. Feast on these Kentucky Fried miracles tomorrow while they last at KFC in Atlanta, Georgia."
