KFC becomes latest food chain to close all stores amid coronavirus pandemic

KFC has become the latest food chain to announce its closure amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The restaurant joins McDonald's, Greggs, Nando's and Subway in shutting down stores completely.

Subway said its branches will shut by 5pm, Monday. McDonald's will close at 7pm and Greggs said they would not be open tomorrow.

KFC is set to close by Wednesday 25 March until further notice.

The latest announcement comes after the number of UK deaths from COVID-19 surpassed the 300 mark.

In a statement, KFC said: "We've decided, together with our franchise partners, to begin closing our restaurants to help protect the wellbeing and safety of our teams and of our guests.

"Restaurants will begin closing from now. They will all close by Wednesday 25th March until further notice.

"It's not a decision we've taken lightly, but it's in the best interests of both incredible teams and all the fans that love our chicken."

KFC said it would find ways to distribute uneaten food to those who need it most through charities it worked with.

"This is already underway in cities across the country and we're grateful to our partners for their continued support," KFC said.

"Finally to all our teams who have been working under such tricky and uncertain circumstances, we thank you deeply, you have been amazing."
