Keys to first homes at major Netherfield development will be handed to residents this month, developers say

Keys will be handed over to the first residents of a major development in Netherfield this month, developers have said.

More than 800 homes are expected to be built at the Teal Close site in the coming years, forming part of the multi-million-pound regeneration planned across the borough of Gedling.

Nearly 200 properties have been approved by planners and the developers have put forward a second application for another 367 homes.

The project could also see a new 210-place primary school being built.

Persimmon Homes Nottingham said builders at the site are making good progress.

A spokesman said: “The first phase of development at our Gedling site has been well-received.

"More than 22 properties have been built and we are working towards handing over the keys to our first customers later this month.

“We are hopeful that the development’s second phase planning application, currently with Gedling Borough Council, will be approved so that we can begin infrastructure works in 2020.

“This is a major development which forms an integral part of our construction and growth programme within Nottinghamshire and will create more than 830 homes over the coming years.

“The development will feature a range of properties from one-bedroom apartments through to two, three, four and five-bedroom houses to meet a range of budgets and lifestyles.

“As part of our current planning conditions, and second phase planning application, the development will feature multiple play areas, footpaths, cycleways and ecological open spaces.

"The development is expected to deliver five percent of affordable housing and we anticipate a further two planning applications over the coming years with the site completed in 2028.”

Gedling Borough Council leader, councillor John Clarke, said the development would alleviate pressure on local schools.

"We have got a big housing problem in the country," he said.

"We have been very pro-active with the local plan. We have got that through.

"Therefore building's going at a fair old rate across the borough. And rooves over people's heads in good-quality housing.

"I'm am very pleased to see it going on. The sooner the next phase, the better."

The Teal Close development has been named Rivendell, as a nod to the area's link with the Lord of the Rings.

The author of the legendary novels, JRR Tolkien, visited his aunt's farm in the Jessops Lane area of Gedling, around two miles from the development on Teal Close.

A spokeswoman for the Home Builders Federation said: “The Government has set out a target of 300,000 new homes by 2020 to tackle the housing crisis that we face in the UK.

"All local authorities need to ensure that they are planning for the future, which includes providing adequate numbers of new housing.

"New developments not only help us to solve the housing crisis, but they also provide a boost for the local economy, create jobs and attract investment.

"New homes also provide significant investment in local infrastructure and amenities, such as education facilities, that benefit both new and existing residents.”
