Keynsham High Street shop closes after nearly 90 years

A popular shop has closed its doors for good after almost 90 years on Keynsham High Street.

Church's newsagent announced news of its closure on social media earlier this month before officially closing its doors on September 24. A post shared on its Facebook account read: "It’s finally here, our last day. It is with mixed feelings but after nearly 90 years, Church’s will close its doors today."

A sign was also shared on the shop front by owners Eric and Margarett Church thanking all of their "loyal customers" who have supported their business over the last nine decades.

Fans of the family-run business flocked to the comment section to share their fond memories of either working alongside owners, simply shopping for goods or having friendly chats.

Jane Baber who often visits Keynsham to see her family said: “Thank you for being part of my childhood and all the years after that. Fond memories popping into Church’s for a sweet treat after school which was handy as it was almost opposite. A sad day indeed for Keynsham.”

Many spoke of visiting the store with their grandparents to buy sweets or advent calenders over 50 years ago.

Some felt that Keynsham High Street would not be the same without their beloved store while others expressed how much the family will be missed and that it was the end of an era.

Tamsin Godfrey said: “Sad to see them go it’s an end of an era they did a very admirable job serving the community for all those years and wish them all the best in the future."

Sue Smith said: “Sad news to read, always remember in my childhood stopping there with my family for sweets before going to my Auntie and uncles house for Sunday tea. Pear drops for dad, dolly mixture, liquorice allsorts and a few other varieties. Good luck with whatever u decide to do in the future.”

Marie Rees said: "Such a sad day for Keynsham, apart from being one of the original shops, if not the only shop left from the old Keynsham, Eric was in Keynsham fire brigade with my dad, and I've been using them since I was in a pram.

"They are going to be so missed, could always get something you needed or if they didn't have it they would order it in. Good luck for the future Eric, Margaret, Nigel and Wendy x love Deirdre and Marie Ricketts xx."

As well as reducing prices for everything inside the store, Church's newsagent also offered up all its fixtures and fittings for sale, including office store units, a painted wardrobe, acrylic stand dividers and much more.
