Key workers to be allowed to cycle through the Birkenhead Tunnel

Cyclists are set to be allowed through one of the Mersey Tunnels in an attempt to help key workers get to work amid reduced public transport.

Merseytravel announced that from today key workers who need to travel between Liverpool and Wirral will be allowed to cycle through the Birkenhead (Queensway) tunnel.

The temporary relaxation of restrictions on bike use in the tunnel is possible because of the huge reduction in traffic using the tunnels during the coronavirus lockdown.

Tolls on the tunnels are currently suspended for all vehicles, with that rule also applying to cyclists.

However Merseytravel urged that all other rules around the lockdown still applied, with anyone who did not need travel urged to avoid any unnecessary journeys.

A Merseytravel spokesman said: "We want to help key workers who need to travel in whatever way we can, so we’re temporarily lifting the restrictions on using bikes in the Queensway Tunnel.

"We’re able to do this because of the huge reduction in traffic through the tunnel due to a majority of people following the advice from the government and the Metro Mayor to stay inside and protect lives.

"Those who do cycle through the Birkenhead tunnel must do so safely and only if their journey is essential. The Mersey Tunnels Police remain on duty and will be making sure that people are abiding by the law and the rules of the road."

Merseytravel said cyclists should ensure they are following the normal rules of the road at all times, travelling in single file and using the nearside lane only with no overtaking allowed.

The transport body said the decision will be kept under constant review and restrictions will be reintroduced when necessary.
