Council claims key worker parents have been dropping their kids off at school then going surfing

Some key worker parents in Pembrokeshire have been going surfing after dropping their children off at school.

It has prompted a warning from Pembrokeshire County Council urging parents across the county not to use schools as a crèche, even if they are entitled to use them as designated key workers.

Current restrictions state that children of critical and key workers, which includes professions such as doctors, nurses, farmers and bus drivers, should only be attending school if their parents can't look after them at home.

But in the west Wales county there have been reports of parents going surfing after dropping their children off at their local primary school, the council explained.

The council's cabinet member for education and lifelong learning, Councillor Guy Woodham, stated that schools "have limited capacity" and reminded parents that they "are not a crèche".

He said: "We know that the vast majority of children currently attending school in Pembrokeshire are there because they are vulnerable, or their parents are critical or key workers and cannot provide childcare - and we are very grateful to all those parents for their valuable work in the fight against Covid.

"However, we would like to remind all parents that schools have limited capacity and are not a crèche, so please consider very carefully whether it is essential that your child receives a place."

Mr Woodham urged parents not to apply for school places if they aren't "scheduled to work".

He added: "I understand that these are challenging and frustrating times for parents but please do not apply for places if you are not scheduled to work, and please look at other appropriate childcare options wherever possible.

"While we look forward to seeing children return to normality and for them to see their friends again, this continues to be a very difficult time for everyone with available school places extremely limited, so please do consider carefully if you need them."
