Key witness sought by police in churchyard murder appeal

This is a key witness who police want to speak to in connection with the brutal murder of a man in a churchyard.

Steven McMyler, 34, was allegedly kicked in the head and suffered fatal injuries outside Wigan Parish Church on August 6.

It has led to five people being charged with murder, including four teenagers from Merseyside.

Two of the teens are aged 17 and 14, while two other men come from Kirkby.

Today, detectives in Greater Manchester released photos showing a man they wish to speak to as part of their enquiry.

They have stressed he is a witness, and not in any trouble.

Detective Inspector Wes Knights, of Greater Mancester Police, said: “Our investigation into Steven’s death has seen us work around the clock to try and ensure that his family and loved ones can get the answers they so desperately wish for.

“Today we are releasing images of a man who was in the area around the time of the incident and we hope will make contact with us as we want to speak to him in relation to the incident as he may hold key information.

“I want to make clear this man is being treated solely as a witness in our investigation and I hope he is able to see this and make contact with us so that we can explore this line of enquiry.”

Shortly before 7.50pm, on Thursday, August 6, police were called by the ambulance service to reports of concern for a man within the churchyard on Bishopgate, Wigan.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Mr McMyler died at the scene and a murder investigation was launched.

In a statement previously released by the police, Mr McMyler's family paid tribute to him.

They said: "Steven was an extremely likeable lad, and everyone who came across him loved him as much as we all did. He was a popular lad, and he lit the room up as soon as he walked in.

"Everybody thought the world of him, as he had a heart of gold."

The 14-year-old boy is charged with murder, along with Jordan Short, 19, of Rushey Hey Road, Kirkby.
