Key takeaways from first-half of Chargers vs. Titans

The Los Angeles Chargers enter halftime all tied up with the Tennessee Titans, 10-10. Here are some takeaways from the Bolts’ Week 7 showdown.

Getting into an offensive groove

There was some life in the Chargers’ first drive of the game. They made a few big plays, but they came up short when they failed their fourth-down conversion. The next two drives were a lot more promising. Quarterback Philip Rivers made a few questionable passes, but other than that, he’s looked sharp.

Wide receiver Keenan Allen is starting to turn things around after two lackluster games. He has four catches for 61 yards. The offensive line has held up in pass protection, giving Rivers plenty of time to throw. The run blocking has been stagnant for the most part. Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler have combined for only 29 yards on 14 carries.

Swallowing up Derrick Henry

Henry was the main focal point entering the game. The Chargers’ rush defense has been questionable and Henry has been running the ball really well this season. So far, the unit has looked stout against the Titans’ rushing offense, only allowing 35 yards on 10 carries.

Defensive end Joey Bosa and linebacker Uchenna Nwosu have done a great job of setting the edges to allow other members to finish the play. Meanwhile, the interior part of the defensive line has held up and hasn’t allowed a lot of big holes. Rookies Jerry Tillery and Cortez Broughton have both shown flashes.

Pass defense hasn’t been too hot

It all starts in the trenches with the lack of pressure. The Chargers have yet to get to Tannehill and as a result, he’s had clean pockets all afternoon. Taking advantage of an offensive line that’s allowed the most sacks in the NFL was key and they haven’t.

Linebacker Thomas Davis has allowed a couple big plays in coverage. The defensive backs made some plays on the ball earlier on, especially by Michael Davis, but that regressed as the game went on. Their zone defense hasn’t been effective.
