Key road into University of West England campus to face months of roadworks

A key road into the main University of West England campus is set to face months of disruption due to roadworks. Coldharbour Lane, which connects the A4174 to the university's Frenchay campus, is in need of work to improve flood resilience, according to South Gloucestershire Council.

The work will start on August 22 and is expected to last around four months until December 19, although the council says this is "subject to weather conditions". During this time, part of the road heading off the A4174 ring road towards UWE will be shut, although the road will remain open to traffic and the other side of the carriageway will be unaffected.

A statement posted on the council's roadwork news Facebook page said: "The work will replace the highway drainage pipe that runs from the A4174 Ring Road and under Coldharbour Lane. About 80m of defective pipe needs to be replaced by workers tunnelling under the road.

"It is a complex piece of work, which will be completed in phases along the road and is expected to take a total of about four months. To minimise traffic disruption, Coldharbour Lane will remain open but parts of the road’s southbound carriageway, from the direction of the A4174 Ring Road towards UWE, will be closed during both phases."

The council said that the second lane of the road heading towards UWE will be closed "for the majority of the time", while the first lane will "mainly" remain open. However, the crew will have to switch lanes for a short period of time, which means that at times the first lane will be closed and the second will be used for traffic.

As well as the Coldharbour Lane disruption, the old Filton Road running from Coldharbour Lane to Frenchay will also need to be closed to drivers for about five days. The council said that the date is yet to be confirmed, but will likely be in the first week of work.
